What I learned after spending a week ICML, one of AI’s top research conferences, in Vancouver
Welcome to an eye on artificial intelligence! In this edition ...Scale AI exceeds 14 % of the workforce after Meta investment, and the employee of Wang...Openai to take Chatgpt shopping sales cutting in revenue...The former Google researchers have built a new type of artificial intelligence agent – and they believe that it might be a step towards the robbery of experts.
I report AI this week from Vancouver, where I was hanging with thousands of researchers at the International Automatic Conference (ICML), which is one of the best annual gatherings of artificial intelligence talents from elite universities, major technology laboratories, and AI’s beginnings.
I will be honest: It is humble to be here, surrounded by professors, and in the Saudi researchers, and industry researchers who fall into the sporting proofs and thermodynamics metrics in a daily conversation. There are thousands of stickers, papers and presentations – a lot that is not intended to absorb it useful, even if all of them fed them in ChatGPT. My mind feels that it works with a maximum capacity as I try to understand the talks entitled “controlling the bias to reduce learning, reinforcement restricted to safe exploration” and “matching the separate flow to generate graphics.”
However, there is an electrician about being in the room where the future of artificial intelligence is discussed and determined and perhaps even redirect. I am a great believer out of my comfort zone – and in the mentality of beginners – especially in an area where today theories may become tomorrow’s techniques. While I conclude my time in ICML, here is what he adheres to:
Talent wars are artificial intelligence in full swing. The unusual and continuous recruitment spray of Meta, which threw tens and even hundreds of millions of dollars in Elite Ai Provessions who were closed from Openaii, Anthropic, Google Deepmin and others, is the talk of ICML. It is clear that some see it too much, as a researcher in London tells me that it creates a “bubble”. Others imagine Meta as a dream – one of the Swedish doctorate student, and shows a group of spoils of many different exhibition hall compartments, including a pair of IBM blue socks – can only hope to have an interview there one day. Either way, Big Tech had recruits working in additional work, with special events an hour after the candidates who were sprayed in places near the Vancouver Conference Center.
There is no better place to ask questions. One of the best things about getting close to smart people is really choosing the brains of smart people. It is useful for artificial intelligence researchers incredibly nice about explaining their work to a curious journalist. In a vast exhibition hall full of flawless grades of presentations of posters, you never know when it will happen to a well -known professor at Stanford University completely happy to spend 20 minutes in chatting on the behavior of self -model and ethical studies. How much is the value of individual meetings here? What about the pioneer in machine learning that hears philosophically for the old days (which is only 10-15 years ago)? Or a former Google Brain researcher explains with patience with the privacy and generalities of transformer models? Nafis.
The expansion of reinforcement learning (RL) is all anger. This is not my plan – he is from the former Tesla Ai leader Andrej Karpathy on X – but RL was everywhere in ICML. (RL, or reinforcement learning, is a training method where you learn artificial intelligence through experience and error, to increase some rewards. This may be points in the game, or the number of “thumb” degrees that the artificial intelligence model outputs receive from one of the human residents. Now, researchers are enhanced and pushed to a large extent to train or sing the major language and a large group. Through more data, more tasks, and the most difficult tasks, you (hope) get better models, follow the instructions more reliable, and act more safely in the settings of chaotic and realistic institutions.
Many researchers are ready to live in their founder’s dream. There is an amazing young duo of Prinston Moderation Models Models. Waymo PhD trainees using Pokemon to prepare large language models and artificial intelligence agents in the strategy. Former Google and Openai former researchers aim to jump the current AI technology. With VCS walking in the halls during the day and offering open events at night, it was easy to watch this research conference as partially for the current misery of current and potential founders.
I am ready to return to New Jersey, with a lot of new ideas and sources in the story. However, here are the rest of the news of artificial intelligence.

Scale AI exceeds 14 % of the workforce after Meta investment, and the employee of Wang. A few weeks after Meta invests $ 14.3 billion in artificial intelligence, and the rented regulator Alexander Wang, AI Startup explains 200 full-time employees-14 % of its working power, according to CNBC. In a memorandum of employees on Wednesday, temporary CEO Jason Darwig, who recently assumed his duties to Wang, said that the company had expanded its efforts from artificial intelligence “very quickly” and building “excessive bureaucracy.” Despite the discounts, Darwig emphasized that the scale is still good and good resources. “These changes will make us smarter – which leads to our reaction more quickly to the transformations in the market and the needs of customers,” he wrote in the memorandum seen by CNBC. “This structure will allow us to serve the customers who have today better and the customers who slowed work with us.”
Openai to take Chatgpt shopping sales cutting in revenue. According to Financial timesOpenai plans to take a set of sales of products that were made directly through ChatGPT as it intensifies efforts to convert Chatbot into an e -commerce platform. Currently, ChatGPT falls in product lists with bonds for external retail dealers. But according to multiple sources familiar with plans, Openai now aims to integrate the complete exit system – allows users to complete purchases within ChatGPT. Traders who benefit from requests through this system Openai will pay a committee. The company also announced a partnership with Shopify in April as part of its wider pushing to shopping by artificial intelligence.
The former Google researchers have built a new type of artificial intelligence agent – and they believe that it might be a step towards the robbery of experts. Startup, thinking, unveiled ASIMOV, an agent who learns how the program is designed not only by reading software instructions, but by digesting everything around it: emails, recession messages, documents, and project updates. according to WirelessThe goal is to create a more capable of artificial intelligence assistant – and teach models how humans actually build things, one decision at once.

Eye on artificial intelligence numbers
75.6 %
This is the amount of start -up financing in the first half of 2025, thanks to the ongoing mutation of artificial intelligence, which this year was placed on the right track to become the second sacral for investing investment capital in history. The US startups in the United States raised a total of $ 162.8 billion in the first six months of the year-and more since the first half of 2021, according to new data from Pitchbook.
While this previous increase was fueled by interest rates very low during the Covid-19 era, this time it leads the momentum. Huge investments invested from Big Tech and Ai Native Companies Superchared the Market, even as many investment boxes continue to struggle by collecting donations. Only in the past three months, startups have brought 69.9 billion dollars.
The prominent deals included the $ 40 billion Openai tour, the $ 14.3 billion Meta share in Scale AI, an increase in plus billion dollars for safe cancellation, thinking machines, Anduril, and rules. Artificial intelligence constituted 64.1 % of the total value of the deal and 35.6 % of the size of the deal in the first half – evidence of money flow (and condemnation).
