China’s 20 year edge: Book reveals why Apple’s plan to shift from Beijing to India is not easy

In his latest book, journalist Patrick McGE said that many engineers and executives at Apple are very climbing in India against China, and for clear reasons, but many of them see emerging challenges.

In his latest book, “Apple In China”, published by Simon & Schuster, he explained that Apple’s arrogance leads to ignoring what China’s unique, determined, and powerful, “in the past 25 years. Parallelly, if India is able to accomplish what it has identified, it will not be mixed from the Apple operations that have spent only years linking its wealth with Beijing, but it will also accelerate India to a manufacturing power.

The author said in his book that Cuperno is making serious efforts to cancel the risk of Apple from China by asking its resources to repeat the model in India. However, it will be a very romantic relationship because Apple cannot bother Beijing and cannot remain either. “They have to walk at the right pace,” said Jay Goldberg, founder of D2D.

This also puts the Taiwanese assembly giant Foxconn in a place. She has already spent a fortune in the creation of its Chinese base as well as its commitment to understanding its policies and culture. McGe said that Apple mainly told Foxconn that it needs to be expanded in India if they want to stick to their iPhone.

For this, the Tata Group has also entered the battle that aims to bring more suppliers to produce iPhone. Tata Electronics bought the IPHONE assembly plant from Wistron in 2023 for $ 125 million, then the only iPhone factory in Pegatron in 2024.

But, as McGe says, the ecosystems of manufacturing in India and China are not similar. The factors that India has in its favor is its enormous working power and cheap work. India is the most populated country, as China exceeded in 2023. Moreover, the average monthly manufacturing wages was only $ 195 in 2024, unlike $ 1139 from China and $ 5912.

However, the main differences, as McGe says in the book below:

  • The abundance of work is the strength of China, but its customization and flexibility. The Chinese state has hosted critically support to fill the factories with migrant workers, while India has no culture of internal immigration. McCjee conveyed a study that stated that India has the lowest rate of internal migration in 80 countries. Also, the work is frequent and there is no great interest in assembling the iPad or iPhone.
  • The adoption of the robot in China is huge. As of 2022, the number of industrial robots spread in China was above 290,000, or more than half of the global total. At the same time, it was 5400 in India.
  • McGI said that the Foxconn Centers in China are surrounded by hundreds of sub -columns, which are all ready to enjoy the next large demand. Goldberg said that to give up this ecosystem would be difficult for China. The Chinese offer a full environmental system of operations for more than two decades.
  • China’s suppliers and government officials have taken an “everything required” to win iPhone requests. There is no same kind of urgency in India.
  • China has easy -to -drive workers, who are systematically exploited by the state, but the Indian government is fragmented and is not motivated in the same way to increase growth. McCji, who gave examples of Samsung workers protesting, said, and in the end, the company gave priority to compliance, said that Indian workers have more than one voice. “In China, this opposition will not receive any media support and be crushed,” said McG
