Your guide to what the second period of Trump means to Washington, business and the world
Zahran Mamdani, the left democratic, is afraid of Wall Street, on his way to win the party’s preliminary elections in New York City, sending shock waves through American policy.
The Mamadani, the Democratic Socialism that called for an increase in taxes on the wealthy and attacked American support for Israel in Gaza, surprised Andrew Como, the former New York State Governor, in the democratic democratic race on Tuesday.
His success will be hesitant throughout Wall Street and among the donor billionaire, including the hedge manager Bill Akman, who has supported his opponent. It will also increase the discussion between Democrats, as they seek a convincing political strategy for Donald Trump.
“Tonight, we have made history,” Mamdani told hundreds of deliberate supporters in Queens on Tuesday night. “I will be your democratic candidate for the mayor of New York City.
He said: “When we no longer believe in our democracy, it becomes easier for people like Donald Trump to convince us of his value, in order to convince us billionaires that they should always lead.”
New York tends to Democrats, and Mamdani’s 33-year-old victory gives a great advantage in the elections later this year to replace Eric Adams as the city’s mayor-one of the most powerful positions in US local politics.
Komo admitted the defeat late Tuesday in a competition widely seen as a referendum on the future of the party.
Como told supporters at the post -election party: “Tonight was our night, tonight. It was the night of the gathering member Mamdani,” adding that he called Mamdani to congratulate him.
Unofficial results showed on Tuesday night, Mamdani, seven points ahead of Komo, where more than 90 percent of the votes were calculated.
The end result depends on the number in the city’s selection system, which allows people to capture up to five candidates for preference. The winner will be officially announced on July 1, as soon as possible, after allocating all the votes of other candidates.
After Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris in the presidential elections last year, the Democrats rushed between the gradual wing embodied by the congress in New York Alexandria Okasio Cortez, and moderates like American Pennsylvania, Senator John Vitirman, who praised Trump.
Mamdani turned his campaign to pledge to make life more affordable for New York residents, whose cost of living has increased since the Covid-19 pandemic. If elected, he says that he will raise taxes on the wealthy to finance free buses and take care of children, as well as city grocery stores.
The progressive candidate took advantage of a group of support between younger voters – an electoral strategy that Democrats study at the national level where they are trying to restore young voters who supported Trump in November.
“Nelson Mandela said: it’s always impossible until it is done,” said Mamdani in X after the result.
OCASIO-Cortez, who took advantage of a similar voter base, congratulated Mamdani on Tuesday night, saying as social media, “They poured billionaires and pressure groups millions against you and our public financial system. She won.”

Cuomo, a player in New York State Policy for more than four decades, has long been the candidate. But the center found itself fighting an increasingly serious challenge from the excellent Mamdani, who has a great follow -up on social media.
After his resignation as a ruler four years ago, amid charges of sexual harassment, which he denies, Komo entered the municipal race in March.
Como committed to restore the resumption of the Democratic Party between the voters from the working class, promised to employ more police officers, improve safety in the subway, and remove the red tape to build more affordable housing.
His campaign was built on the thesis that the Democratic Party has been “kidnapped”, and that “he no longer fights for workers anymore.”
The Cuomo campaign has a feature to collect large donations on competitors in the last weeks of the race, supported by large contributions, including former mayor Michael Bloomberg.
In combination, external donations collection collections spent more than $ 20 million. Mamdani’s campaign relied on small contributions, with more than 21,000 donors, approximately 75 percent of them gave less than $ 100.
Eric Adams, the current mayor, will run in the general elections in November as independent. His approval rating is only 20 percent after being charged last year of bribery and fraud in a case later.
