Donald Trump to slash workforce at US education department

The Trump administration has reduced nearly half of the workforce in the US Department of Education, in a move towards the president’s pledge to cancel the agency.

The Ministry of Education said on Tuesday that it was on its “final mission” because it announced that it would exclude more than 1300 workers.

The move comes at a time when President Donald Trump looks at whether to issue an executive order to close the administration, although a procedure is needed by Congress to completely cancel it.

Education Minister Linda McMahon Fox News told that she believed Trump “certainly intends to sign” an executive thing that would lead to the closure of the administration.

The administration has always been a target for conservatives, who argue that education should be fully left in the control of individual countries, which define curricula and deal with the daily administration of the public or governmental and secondary education system in the country.

Project 2025, called on the conservative presidency set by the right -wing Heritage Foundation, to cancel the administration.

Trump said he wanted “countries to manage schools” and McMahon “to get themselves out of a job.

McMahon said on Tuesday: “Today’s reduction in the force reflects the Ministry of Education’s commitment to competence and accountability and ensure somewhat directing resources: for students, parents and teachers,” McMahon said on Tuesday. The move described “an important step towards restoring the greatness of the education system in the United States.”

The administration will move from employees from 4,133 to about 2,183 employees. Discounts include 572 workers voluntarily, including through the Trump administration’s federal acquisitions. The affected employees will be placed on an administrative leave starting on March 21.

Teachers have warned that low -income families will be more difficult by evacuating the department.

The American Federation of Teachers said that the decision will affect 90 percent of children attending the state or public schools. “Reducing Federal Education programs in chaos throughout the country.”

The Ministry of Education oversees student loans to the university, as well as granting special higher education to low -income students, known as Pell Grants. It also gives money to individual educational areas to finance primary and secondary education for children with low and self -income.

The agency said it will continue to “provide all legal programs that fall under the jurisdiction of the agency, including formulating formulas, student loans, Pell grants, financing for students with special needs and making competitive grants.”
